Looking After Your Child’s Teeth

Starting good oral hygiene habits from a young age is an important part of ensuring children have a positive attitude towards dental care through the rest of their life. It can be a challenge looking after your child’s teeth however, so here are a few tips that can help.

Introduce kids to the dental environment early on

Getting your child familiar with the dental environment from a young age can help to prevent any anxieties from being developed. A good way to do this can be to take them along with you when you go in for your own dental check up. You can take them in to get their own teeth counted when some of them come through and once they’ve reached 1 year old you should take them to see the dentist twice a year so their teeth can be monitored as well as given a professional clean.

Help them brush

Kids don’t have the dexterity needed to brush their own teeth until around 7 years of age, so you’ll need to help them with brushing their teeth (and flossing until they are about 10) to ensure their teeth are getting properly cleaned. You can help guide their hand while they brush so they get used to where the brush should go and then let them have a go themselves. Just make sure to check their teeth after they’ve brushed, as you’ll likely need to give your child’s teeth a proper brush yourself, especially for the hard to reach teeth at the back of their mouth.

Make looking after their teeth fun

Getting kids to look after their own teeth can be tricky to start with, so by making it fun you can get them more interested in sticking to the routine. Play music or create a game around brushing their teeth so kids find it a more fun thing to do. Getting them to pick out their own toothbrush in their favorite colour or with their favorite character on it can also help with getting children more excited about brushing their teeth.
